Workshop Session 1 (4:15 – 5:15 pm):

  • Bulgarian Traditional Games – learn to play some of the most popular games- Diana Hristova

The traditional games featured in this workshop are close to the heart of everybody who once was a child growing and playing in Bulgaria.  The goal of the workshop will be to introduce children to some of the games we use to play as kids: “Igra na Lastic” (“Elastic Cord”), “Kazancheto Vri” ( “Boiling Cauldron”), „Cheren Petar” (“Black Peter”), “Dai, babo, ogantche!” (“Granny, can please, give me a spark”) and many other. Some of the games ask for only 3 to 4 players and others can start whenever a group of 8-10 participants is gathered. These games are a part of the traditional culture as they are still played in the cold winter evenings with the family or in the warm summer nights with friends on the street. Bring your child or the child in you and enjoy this workshop!

  • Traditional Bulgarian Pogacha-bread – learn how to braid bread-dough into ancient ritualistic breads (senior center) – Mira Stoyanova / Lily Jekov

Bulgarian women have made bread for centuries and bread has become one of the most important parts in any ritual. Festive breads play a vital part in all Bulgarian rites of passage – births, christenings, a toddler’s first steps, weddings and funeral traditions. Women and men break traditional bread on Christmas, Easter and for many Christian celebrations. Following the specific occasion, traditional breads are decorated with ancient symbolic figures and shapes or they are braided into striking creations.
Participants in this workshop will receive ready-made bread dough and learn to shape it into the various traditional breads; we will also provide recipes, so you can make you own tasty dough at home.
  • Make a Martenica – create a healing Good Luck-Charm for the Spring (senior center) – Viktoria Eftimova

Make a Martenica and learn more about the tradition of creating, wearing and gifting Martenici. The Martenica is a unique embellishment made with red and white yarn, beads and tassels. The white colour signifies purity, while the red is a symbol of rejuvenation and revival. Each year on March 1st Bulgarians give each other Martenicas. A friend or relative would pin the Martenica to your sleeve or tie it around your wrist thereby wishing you good health and prosperity. People would wear the Martenici until they see the first sign of spring. This beautiful amulet is going to bring you good luck, harmony, sound health and longevity, it will help you celebrate the change of seasons and the never-ending cycle of life.
